Berlin, Germany – Monday, January 27th 2025 – In anticipation of World Pizza Day on February 9th, foodora, one of the leading food delivery services in Europe, unveils its very first 2025 pizza index. This index provides insights into pizza prices across Austria, Hungary, Czechia, Norway, Sweden, and Finland—highlighting the most affordable country and cities to order a pizza, showcasing the best budget-friendly restaurants for pizza lovers, and revealing the most popular pizza choices. As pizza remained the top-ordered dish on foodora in 2024, with over 3.5 million orders across these six countries, foodora aims to make it an annual tradition to track price trends.
“This index offers more than just a glimpse into restaurant or pizza pricing,” says Herbert Haas, Chief International Officer at foodora. “it provides a unique lens into the broader economic landscapes of these different European countries, reflecting local costs of living, ingredient prices, and market dynamics.”
Hungary takes the lead in affordable pizza with a median price for a Margherita pizza of €7.46, ahead of Czechia (€8.46) and Austria (€9.50). Unsurprisingly, pizza prices in the Nordic countries tend to be higher, with Norway leading as the most expensive, boasting a median price of €16.15.
Szeged in Hungary takes the crown for the most budget-friendly pizza Margherita city at €7.49, making it the cheapest city across all six countries analyzed. On the flip side, Bergen, Norway, holds the title of the priciest city, with pizza costing an impressive €18.68, more than double Szeged’s price.
Cities in Scandinavia, such as Turku in Finland (€15.75) and Göteborg (€14.17) in Sweden, consistently rank among the most expensive, whereas Central European cities like České Budějovice (€7.95) in Czechia and Salzburg (€10.75) in Austria offer more wallet-friendly options.
While capitals like Vienna (€13.00) and Budapest (€9.74) tend to be more expensive within their respective countries, Helsinki (€13.85), Oslo (€13.84), Stockholm (€12.76) and Prague (€9.06) remain more competitively priced as capitals.
Pizza lovers can enjoy the most budget-friendly pizzas in Budapest, Hungary, from Pizza Foriù that offers remarkable prices at just €1.97 to the Staglio restaurant at €5.41 in Norway. Worth noticing that half of these restaurants (Hungary, Czechia and Norway) sell pizzas by the slice in various sizes, a trend that is rapidly expanding as consumers and restaurants alike appreciate its economic advantages over traditional whole pizza ordering.
The ranking showcases a clear consumer preference for classic and traditional pizza styles, with the iconic Pizza Margherita claiming the top spot. This timeless combination of tomatoes and cheese continues to dominate consumer choices, demonstrating the appeal of simple options. Meat-based options like Salami, Ham and Kebab are also very popular. Interestingly, the presence of a kid-sized Margherita in the top five suggests a growing market for family-friendly dining options, highlighting the pizza’s universal appeal across age groups.
