Berlin, Germany – Monday, April 2nd 2025 – At the occasion of the upcoming International Pet Day on April 11th, foodora, one of the leading delivery services in Europe, shows new data insights about what pet owners order for their furry loved ones at the last minute, with cats seemingly to be the favorite pets when it comes to spending.
foodora delivers anything to customers’ doors in 30 minutes or less. Over the last years, the demand for pet products has increased, with orders doubling between 2023 and 2025. This highlights the increasing popularity of last-minute pet supply purchases: year-over-year growth remains strong, with a 30% increase between February 2024 and February 2025, and a 25% rise when comparing full-year sales from 2023 to 2024. Basket penetration for pet products has also expanded significantly, rising from 3% in 2023 to 4.5% in February 2025.
Overall, more than 85% of total sales on foodora are food products, with canned food being the most popular item. Surprisingly, flea killer aerosol ranks as the second best-selling product overall. Other popular items worth noticing in accessories are dog poop bags. Additional popular products include cat litter and hay for small pets like rodents and rabbits. Notably absent are any bird-related products.
Here is below a more granular ranking of single products getting the most orders on foodora.
The top-selling products on foodora reveal interesting pet owner preferences. HappyPet Flea Killer Aerosol claims the #1 spot, while salmon-based cat foods dominate the food category—Gourmet Gold Salmon Mousse ranks second overall, suggesting cats particularly enjoy salmon flavors. Cat products continue their strong showing with two premium litters (Cattia Clumping White and Primacat Fresh Unscented) in the top ten. Dog foods featuring beef and turkey (Bodie Adult Ragout and Paté) also make the list, alongside chicken chew treats. Rounding out the top sellers is Panzi Rodent Hay, indicating small pet owners are active last minute shoppers too.
Cats dominate with cat products like canned food and litter accounting for nearly 60% of sales compared to dog products at just 25%. This clear preference for feline-related items shows cats have won the popularity contest against dogs when it comes to consumer spending.
