Berlin, Germany – June 25th 2025 – As European capitals brace for another busy holiday season, a new trend is quietly transforming the way tourists dine. According to recent analysis of over 36 months of food delivery data from foodora, there’s a clear and growing shift in tourist behavior: more people are ordering delivery from hotels and hostels during winter months, particularly in cities like Vienna, Prague, and Budapest.
Between March 2024 and March 2025, orders originating from hotel and hostel addresses grew by 10% year-over-year, with a steady 5% increase over the past year. This suggests not just a seasonal spike, but a sustained shift in traveler preferences.
The average spending per order also rose consistently:
– +20% YoY growth from March 2022 to March 2023
– +5% annual growth in both 2024 and 2025
This means tourists are not only ordering more frequently but are also spending more when they do.
Contrary to expectations, the peak ordering periods are not in the summer, but rather in the winter months, especially around Christmas. The spike is most prominent in cities known for their seasonal charm:
– Vienna
– Prague
– Budapest
These destinations, famous for their Christmas markets, draw thousands of visitors, many of whom now opt for delivery in the warmth of their accommodations, skipping the crowds and queues of local restaurants, escaping the cold weather and the post-sightseeing fatigue.
“What we’re seeing is a new kind of hospitality experience,” says Herbert Haas, Chief International Officer at foodora, “Tourists are embracing the flexibility of food delivery platforms, using them to tailor their own meal experiences without sacrificing comfort or time.”
This shift is reshaping hotel dining experiences, as tourists see delivery as a complement, or even an alternative to traditional room service.
“For hotels, hostels and tourism boards, the rise in delivery orders offers valuable insight into guest behavior. Partnering with delivery platforms isn’t just convenient, it can elevate the guest experience during peak travel seasons. And for restaurants, there’s real opportunity in tailoring offers to match seasonal tourism demand.” comments Herbert Haas
